Essays · An original short read
In praise of reading it again
The pleasure of returning to a familiar text with different questions.
Familiarity changes the reading
On a second reading, suspense makes room for structure. You may notice how an opening prepares the ending, or how a small repeated image carries more weight than you first understood. Knowing what happens does not mean knowing everything a text can do.
Notice the reader who returned
The book may be unchanged, but the reader is not. A passage that once seemed unimportant can meet a new experience. Leave space for that difference instead of trying to recover your first reaction exactly.
Keep the door open
A reread need not begin at page one. Return to a chapter, a poem, or a paragraph you remember imperfectly. A familiar work can be a place to visit rather than a task to finish.
